Read this first. 112 is free, works from a locked phone with no credit, and is active in Badung. The operator may not speak English, so say your location slowly: Sawangan, Nusa Dua, Kuta Selatan, Badung. For anything medical you will usually be helped faster, and in English, by calling the hospital below directly. That is what villas and hotels here actually do.

By a dog, a monkey, a cat or a bat. This matters more here than at home, because Bali has rabies.

1. Wash the wound for at least 15 to 20 minutes with soap and running water. Then Betadine if you have it. This single step does more than anything else you can do.
2. Go to hospital the same day for rabies treatment. Do not wait to see how it looks tomorrow. BIMC Nusa Dua, +62 361 3000911, open 24 hours.
3. Ask specifically about immunoglobulin, not just the vaccine. For a real bite you normally need both. If it is not in stock you may need a larger hospital, so call your insurer at the same time.
4. Note where the animal was and what it looked like.

Both networks use the same password. Hikari 5G is the faster one close to the router, Hikari reaches further through the house and out to the pool. If a video call stutters, switch to the other one.

Nothing is walkable from the villa, so the first shop is a short drive. GrabMart and GoMart deliver from all of these to the gate, which is much the easiest way to get the heavy things, big water bottles included.

• Light switches. The switches in the rooms are smart panels, not ordinary switches. On each panel the left button turns the light on and off, the middle button dims it, and the right button turns the air conditioning on and off. The air conditioning starts at 23°C. In the downstairs lounge the same panel works the terrace and pool lights instead.

  

• Air conditioning. Close the doors and windows in a room before you run it, otherwise it fights the outside air and drips. Switch it off when you leave.
• Drinking water. Do not drink from the tap. Use the drinking water dispenser, and use bottled water for brushing teeth if you prefer to be careful. Ice from the freezer is made with drinking water and is fine.
• Power cuts. Short power cuts happen in Bali. Everything comes back by itself. If it does not, message us.
• The pool. No diving, it is not deep enough.
• BBQ. Ask us and we will have it set up and cleaned for you.
• Geckos live in every house in Bali, including the nice ones. They eat mosquitoes and are entirely harmless.

Everything below is within about half an hour. Tap Location and your phone will take you there. Most hotel restaurants take outside guests, but book a table, and ask about the dress code and any age rules when you do.

Seven within twenty minutes, and they are not interchangeable. The reef beaches are for swimming, the cliff beaches are for looking at.

Day beds, pools and a bar on the sand. Most charge a minimum spend rather than an entry fee, and the good ones need booking in high season.

The minutes on the cards in this guide are a rough drive time from the villa with clear roads. Bali traffic decides the rest, so give yourself more time in the late afternoon.

There is no useful public transport in Sawangan. Beyond Samiya and Le Jean Bart around the corner, plan on an app or a taxi for every trip. Keep small notes on you for drivers and parking.

The small things that make the difference in Bali.

Monkeys pass through now and then. It is not often, but it happens, and how you behave decides whether they move on or move in.

• Never feed them. Not once, not a scrap. One feed and they come back every day, for the rest of the season, for every guest after you.
• Keep food out of sight, indoors as well as out. Nothing left on the outdoor table, the kitchen island or the terrace. Fruit especially, they can see it through the glass.
• Close the doors when you leave a room or go out, and leave no phones, sunglasses or bags on the outdoor furniture.
• If one gets inside, do not chase it, corner it or shout. Open a door to the garden, step well back and give it a clear way out. It will leave on its own.
• Do not stare, do not smile with your teeth showing, do not run. To a monkey all three read as a threat. Keep children next to you and empty handed.
• Do not try to take something back that one has picked up. It is a phone. It is not worth a bite.

Same animal, much bolder version. You will meet them at Uluwatu Temple and around GWK. The macaques there have learned to take sunglasses, phones, hats and jewellery and hold them until a staff member trades food for the item. It is organised and they are very quick.

• Take sunglasses, hats and dangling jewellery off before you go in.
• Put your phone away. Do not hold it out to film one.
• Carry no visible food, drinks or plastic bags.
• Do not try to grab your belongings back. Let the temple staff do the trade.
• Keep children close and empty handed.

Anywhere, villa or temple: a bite or scratch, however small, means washing the wound for 15 to 20 minutes and going to hospital the same day. The steps are in the emergency section.

Bali has a lot of street dogs, and rabies is present on the island. Nearly all of them are harmless and uninterested in you, but the rule is simple: admire them from a distance.

• Do not touch, feed or pet street dogs, including the friendly ones and the puppies.
• Do not run past a dog, it triggers a chase. Walk calmly, no eye contact, never corner one.
• Take extra care walking or jogging on the quiet lanes around Sawangan at dawn and dusk.
• Keep children away from all dogs, even ones that clearly belong to somebody.

• The water inside the reef at Nusa Dua and Geger is calm and the best place to swim.
• The open beaches, Sawangan included, get real currents. If there is a red flag, do not go in.
• Reef shoes are worth it at low tide. The coral cuts, and coral cuts get infected easily.
• The sun here is nearer the equator than you are used to. Reef safe sunscreen, and a hat between 11 and 3.

• Cash is still king for drivers, warungs, parking and beaches. Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants.
• Use ATMs attached to a bank branch rather than free standing ones.
• Tipping is not expected but is appreciated. Rounding up, or 5 to 10 percent, is plenty.
• Mosquitoes come out at dusk. Repellent in the evening is a good habit, dengue exists here.
• Nyepi, the Balinese day of silence, closes the whole island including the airport for 24 hours. If your stay covers it, you stay in the villa, and it is one of the most beautiful days of the year.
• At temples, cover shoulders and knees and wear the sarong they give you.
